WOMAN ESCAPES DEATH AFTER CAR PLOUGHS INTO RIVER
A woman has been pulled out of her overturned vehicle by Police after ploughing into the River Medina at Coppins Bridge in Newport this morning (Saturday).
It is said the female driver is lucky to be alive after crashing through a barrier and coming to rest in a significant amount of water outside the Cineworld complex. The incident happened at around 01:30.
Police officers put their own lives on the line to rescue the woman, who was trapped inside her Vauxhall Corsa. Those at the scene say if the water was any deeper, as it is at high tide, she may well have died.
Firefighters from the adjacent Newport Fire Station quickly mobilised an appliance and rescue tender to the scene and later stood by as the vehicle was pulled from the river by Stag Lane Motors.
The driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
Temporary safety barriers are being erected around the damaged section of barrier, however Coppins Bridge remains open to traffic as normal.
